The man who tried to blow up an airliner bound for Detroit on Christmas Day 2009 is appealing his life sentence. The appeal comes one day after a judge declared the sentence “just punishment” for an attempted act of terror. Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab pleaded guilty to attempting to explode a device hidden in his underwear on board a plane with nearly 300 passengers. He was sentenced to life in prison with the judge commenting that she believed he posed a significant, ongoing threat to the public. Abdulmutallab called it a day of victory. Now he is appealing. Before the hearing his court-appointed legal advisor maintained the punishment was cruel and unconstitutional – noting that no actual damage or injury to anyone other than Abdulmutallab occurred during the attack. The government counters that Abdulmutallab created a climate of extreme fear – the goal of any terrorist operation.
