Barrier Busters: Wellness for Life: Also in partnership with ASCD, DRIS was the only Radio Reading/Audio Information Service to win lead media role in a public broadcasting Sound Partners for Community Health grant initiative. The 2-year social marketing project focused on using closed-circuit radio, the Internet, community journalism and storytelling to improve the health and wellness of isolated, vulnerable senior citizens. The project enrolled more than 30 senior services organizations and some-50 volunteers to help produce four town hall meetings, eight targeted radio programs and a two-year, on-air health awareness campaign using the recorded stories of project participants to emphasis the message. The Barrier Busters kick-off was presented at Michigan's first Elder Friendly Summit.
Barrier Busters was a project of "Sound Partners for Community Health! -- a program of the Benton Foundation, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which is dedicated to improving health and health care for all Americans."
