Decisions, Decisions - Link to Audio
Yesterday, as you've undoubtedly heard, more damaging text messages were released. Does this alter your opinion about the ongoing scandal? Are the Mayor's foibles still apart of your daily conversations? What would you rather be talking about? How has this story affected you, your neighbors?
We're in the midst of sports madness. The Wings and Pistons are hanging in, while the Tigers are trying to find their soul. Meanwhile, the Lions just picked up a few youngsters in the draft that will hopefully lead them into a new day. We'll distill these sports matters this morning with our first ever sports bloggers roundtable. Bill Ferris runs detroittigers.weblog.com. Matt Watson runs detroitbadboys.com, and Al Beaton is The Wayne Fontes Experience. Lastly, Onthewingsblog.com, ran by Matt Slaer will join us.
Michigan's only oil refinery, located between Fort Street and Oakwood Boulevard east of Schaefer Road in southwest Detroit could undergo a 1.9 million dollar expansion in the coming year. Marathon says the expansion will create jobs, while concerned citizens and environmentalist claim it will further degrade the air quality of the area. If you have an opinion about the matter, you can attend the public hearing tonight at the Kemeny Center gym in Detroit. You can also call us up. The Department of Environmental Quality's Bob McAnn joins us on the phone this morning.
Speaking of contentious environmental decisions, the incinerator has been fully operational since 1989, burning the city's garbage (as well as trash trucked in from the suburbs) to produce steam and electricity in a process known as "waste to energy." We'll talk to the Metro Times' Curt Guyette about the upcoming incinerator vote (Jun.1) and it's implications. (Stay tuned in the coming weeks for an extensive series of incinerator-related interviews on DT).
Lastly, a new book about Iggy Pop is out.
“Fellow rock stars, casual members of the public, lords and media magnates, countless thousands of people will talk of their encounters with this driven, talented, indomitable creature, a man who has plumbed the depths of depravity, yet emerged with an indisputable nobility. Each of them will share an admiration and appreciation of the contradictions and ironies of his incredible life. Even so, they are unlikely to fully comprehend both the heights and the depths of his experience, for the extremes are simply beyond the realms of most people’s understanding.”
The author, Paul Trynka will join us. You can meet Trynka tonight at the Detroit Public Library at 6:00 p.m.
Julie Halpert will be in to talk about her "well-written, thoughtful book that could help every mother and daughter connect-or reconnect-at a deeper, more fulfiling level."
