Warren Officers Can Buy Work Rifles
Dec 5, 2008
General

Warren’s police commissioner says the department is starting a first of its kind program to keep its officers safe.

It’s safe to say most people purchase some equipment related to their jobs. Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer says with his officers lacking proper rifles to handle criminals armed with semi-automatic weapons. So, why not take the same approach, but with a twist? He says the city will pay for a new rifle up front, but then…

“The officer can through a payroll deduction purchase the rifle but not own it until he or she retires and they pay the last $1.”

Dwyer says the SWAT team rifles cost about $1,100 each. The purchase needs to be completed over one year.

Dwyer says the program allows cities, like Warren, to put better weapons in the hands of its officers during tough economic times for municipalities.
