After a loan package for U-S automakers collapsed in the Senate yesterday (Thurs.)…United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger blamed Senate Republicans for singling out the union. We have more from WDET’s Sarah Cwiek…
SOQ
Gettelfinger says Senate Republicans subjected the union to a double standard…asking them to give up more than other stakeholders to pass a now-defunct auto bailout package. The U-A-W chief says the union made every effort to negotiate a last-minute compromise plan with Tennessee Senator Bob Corker…but the G-O-P caucus rejected it. Gettelfinger says Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson must now step up and help the industry:
“The UAW calls on Secretary Treasurer Paulson or the Federal Reserve to use their authority to prevent the imminent collapse of the automakers.”
Gettelfinger says even if the U-A-W agreed to work without pay for the rest of the year…that still wouldn’t save the automakers enough cash to last until January. This is Sarah Cwiek…WDET news.
