State To Pick Emergency Financial Manager For DPS
Dec 8, 2008
Metro Desk

DPS Superintendent Connie Calloway

Governor Granholm will choose an emergency manager to handle the troubled finances of the Detroit Public Schools.

State schools superintendent Michael Flanagan says Detroit school officialshave not lived up to their end of a bargain that includes developing a workable plan to eliminate a deficit.  The budget gap has been pegged at somewhere between 100 and 400 million dollars.

Flanagan will submit up to three names to the governor within a week. She will choose one of those to serve as the emergency financial manager of the state’s largest school district. The district has 10 days to request a hearing to appeal his decision.

The state took over the Detroit schools in 1999. That takeover lasted four years.
