Report: Council Should Consider Ousting Mayor
May 5, 2008
Metro Desk - Link to Audio

The 35-page report was prepared by independent attorney Bill Goodman on behalf of City Council. After looking into the circumstances surrounding the settlement of a costly whistleblowers lawsuit…Goodman has concluded that Mayor Kilpatrick violated the city charter. He says the Mayor withheld key information from Council while it considered the settlement…namely the existence of incriminating text messages. Goodman also says Kilpatrick used the city’s law department in order to avoid embarrassment and criminal liability…in violation of the city charter.

Besides laying out the allegations…Goodman also made several recommendations.  He says Council could oust the mayor on its own…ask Governor Jennifer Granholm to remove the Mayor or immediately censure Kilpatrick.

Goodman also recommended that Council make several changes to the city charter. I’m Noah Ovshinsky, WDET News.
