Public Hearing Delayed... Forfeiture Hearing on Schedule
Jul 8, 2008
General

A public hearing on rules the Detroit City Council will follow as part of its effort to force Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick from office has been delayed, again.

A public notice had to be published a month ahead of the hearing originally scheduled for July 25th… but the City Clerk failed to meet the publishing deadline.

Councilwoman Shelia Cockrel says she’s upset the public hearing will have to wait until August 8th.

“At some point we need to get to the bottom of how those kind of errors happen so they don’t happen again, because they have an institutional image consequence and God knows we don’t need any more images issues than we already have.”

Even though the hearing is delayed, the forfeiture of office proceedings are still expected to start the week of August 18th.

Kilpatrick is accused of violating the city charter by not revealing a confidentiality agreement tied to an $8.4 million whistle-blowers' settlement.

The council also has asked Governor Jennifer Granholm to remove the Mayor for misconduct.

The Mayor says the council has no legal basis to remove him.
