About two months out from the February special mayoral primary, businessman Dave Bing leads the pack of 18 running to be mayor. The poll shows the NBA hall of famer ahead with almost 32% of likely voters willing to elect him. Interim Mayor Ken Cockrel, Junior polls second at 23% followed by former Deputy Mayor Freeman Hendrix at 12%.
Looking at city issues, 54% of respondents said bringing jobs to Detroit should be the mayor’s top priority. That was followed by reducing crime, improving the schools and fixing the city’s finances.
Meanwhile, 55% of Detroiters believe the city is on the wrong track. That’s an improvement from 80% feeling the city was on the wrong track at the height of the Kilpatrick scandal in back in August.
The Detroit Renaissance poll was conducted by phone earlier this month. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4% points.
