Organizers Plan Scaled-Back Detroit Winter Blast
Dec 17, 2008
General

Robert Ficano

The city of Detroit will host a scaled-down version of the annual Winter Blast in February. Winter Blast organizers say they’re planning the event…which debuted during the 2006 Super Bowl…on only a quarter of the million-dollar budget they’ve had in previous years. Some casualties of the budget cuts include the usual snow slide and snow shoeing. But attendees will still be able to view ice sculptures and ice skate in Campus Martius Park. Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano…who will co-chair the Blast with Detroit Mayor Ken Cockrel Junior…says the event is important for downtown businesses:

“I see this factor as critical in keeping the promotion…publicity…and economic impact flowing in the downtown Detroit during this time when businesses really need it most.”

Ficano says the Winter Blast will serve as a major bridge event in early 2009…between January’s Auto Show and March’s N-C-A-A basketball Final Four at Ford Field. The Winter Blast will run from February 6th through 8th at Detroit’s Campus Martius Park.
