Michigan Losing Thousands Of 'High-Tech' Jobs
Jan 1, 2009
Automotive & Business

The struggling economy is hurting growth in industries once considered recession-proof.

In Michigan…new data shows the state lost more than six-thousand technical and scientific jobs over the past year.

Detroit Public Radio’s Quinn Klinefelter has more…

The downturn in the US auto industry and manufacturing jobs outsourced overseas has mired Michigan in an economic recession for several years now.

But the troubled economy is also eroding so-called “high-tech” companies in Michigan.

The state’s Labor and Growth Department reports Michigan lost more than six-thousand jobs in areas like engineering and computer programming during 2008.

Almost all of those job cuts came near the end of the year…when the overall national economy began to freefall.

Analysts predict a lack of growth in technology-based jobs as well…because those kind of start-up companies tend to rely on now scarce venture capital.

But the pharmaceutical and medical research sectors are forecast to remain strong in the coming year.
