Judge Allows Kilpatrick To Attend Democratic Convention
Aug 14, 2008
General

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick

A Wayne County judge has changed Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s travel restrictions.

Judge Leonard Townsend ruled this morning (Thurs) that Mayor Kilpatrick can attend the Democratic National Convention in Denver later this month.    And Townsend says the mayor will be allowed to attend the convention without a tether.

“I also don’t think that the people of the city of Detroit and the state of Michigan should be represented by a person wearing prison clothes or wearing a tether.”

Late last week, Judge Thomas Jackson ordered Kilpatrick to wear a tether…and restricted his travel to Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties.  That ruling came after another judge found that Kilpatrick had violated his bond conditions.

The prosecutor’s office says it’s filing an appeal of Judge Townsend’s bond modifications.
