Internet Retailers Await Sales Results For 'Cyber Monday'
Dec 1, 2008
Automotive & Business

Today (Mon) marks the traditional start of holiday shopping on-line…but retailers are unsure how big a buying-season it will be.

Detroit Public Radio’s Quinn Klinefelter has more…

The day after Thanksgiving is known as Black Friday…because many stores rely on sales that day to push their financial bottom line into the black.

The Monday after the weekend has also gained a name: Cyber Monday…because so many people purchase items over the internet.

Retailers…worried that the global economic downturn would limit sales…received good news when Black Friday sales exceeded expectations.

But some on-line retailers fear the large number of discounts and other incentives designed to lure shoppers into stores may cut into potential internet sales.

The National Federation of Retailers estimates as many as five million people will have shopped on-line today…with electronic products and arts and crafts the most sought after items.
