Grand Opening Of The Arthur Miller Theatre
Mar 27, 2007
Arts and Culture - Link to Audio

The new Arthur Miller Theatre opens Thursday at the University of Michigan. As Detroit Public Radio’s Celeste Headlee reports, it is the only theatre in the world to bear the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer’s name: In the English-speaking world, only Shakespeare’s plays are performed more often than Arthur Miller’s. Miller received dozens of requests from universities and theatres all over the world to lend his name to a building, but he always refused… until his alma mater made the request. The playwright’s son, Robert Miller, says his father had a deep love for the University of Michigan and that’s why he decided to give the new theatre his name. It’s really his gift and his obligation of giving back… …the experience he had there and how that really shaped and molded him into the talent that he became. The Arthur Miller Theatre gets its grand opening on Thursday with a private invitational performance of his drama Playing for Time. The show runs through April 8th, but all performances are sold out. The university is also holding a Global Miller Symposium Thursday, beginning at 3pm at the UM Alumni Center. I’m Celeste Headlee.
