The band is trying to raise 250 thousand dollars for a trip to perform in China.  The students hope to play at the American Celebration of Music in July.

Band director Victoria Miller says she’s surprised by the charitable foundations support.

“I’ve never experienced anything like this. I think that’s why…I was not as scared of the money as scared of all of this attention.  I like to do great things with children. And I want them to see the world. This is great it gives them chance….it’s going to inspire them to be great people.”

Miller says the Martin Luther King High School band has practiced hard to get to this point.

She says many of her past students would never have gone to college if it hadn’t been for the music and the band programs at the school.
