DPS Fights Takeover During Hearing
Dec 18, 2008
General - Link to Audio

Lawyers with the Detroit Public Schools objected to the hearing but state education officials continued with the proceeding anyway.  State Superintendent Mike Flanagan says the district is in a “financial emergency” and needs outside help to eliminate a deficit that could reach as high as 400-million dollars. D-P-S has fought the appointment…claiming that the district was already making significant progress. Flanagan says whatever he decides…he hopes the district will treat its relationship with the state as a partnership.

“With our without a financial manager there is an enormous opportunity  for this community and this board and the superintendent and staff to really make a difference and be the lighthouse big city to show academics achievements that have not been seen in this country.”

The school board fired Superintendent Connie Calloway earlier this week and installed a temporary leader. Board officials say they hope to name an interim Superintendent sometime in January. Flanagan says he’ll decide whether to reverse his previous order by the end of THIS year. I’m Noah Ovshinsky, WDET News.
