Detroit Film in the Running for Cannes Film Festival
Jan 29, 2010
Metro Desk

A Detroit area filmmaker is hoping his latest short film will lead him to the biggest film festival in the world.

At next week’s Mitten Movie Project, the headlining film is “The Message” – a futuristic short film about a post-apocalyptic Detroit. Mike Zawacki is the director.

“We came to the idea of the concept pretty organically. It was a lot of us sitting around in a room chewing over ideas until somebody mentioned the voicemails that people left for their loved ones on 9-11 and it just kind of snowballed into this idea of a message left… shot out into space essentially and then picked up years later by this little girl.”

The nine-minute short is in the International 48 Hour Film Project and will compete against more than 50 different films from cities around the world in Las Vegas in April. The winner will be part of a screening at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

The local screening of “The Message” takes place during the Mitten Movie Project this Tuesday, February 2nd, at 7:30 at the Main Art Theater in Royal Oak.
