Detroit City Council Orders Release Of Text Messages
Mar 27, 2008
Metro Desk - Link to Audio

A Wayne County Judge has already ruled that certain text messages can be released to the Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press. The papers sued to get access to the messages…citing the Freedom of Information Act. Lawyers for Kilpatrick claim that federal law prevents their release but Council wants to make it clear that it will not stand in the way of  making them public. Council’s independent attorney…Bill Goodman.

“…this resolution simply provides that no one can say that the owner of the text messaging devices…namely the city of Detroit…is standing in the way of transparency in government or standing in the way of disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act.

The only council member to vote no on the resolution…was President Pro-Tem Monica Conyers…who took issue with its language. I’m Noah Ovshinsky, WDET News.
