Councilwoman: Beatty's Plea Not the End for City

A Detroit City Councilwoman says Christine Beatty’s plea bargain ends one chapter in the criminal case involving the Mayor and his former Chief of Staff. Beatty’s guilty plea in the text messaging/whistleblowers lawsuit scandal means she will not go to trial.

Instead, Beatty will pay $100,000 in restitution to the city, spent four-months in jail and five-years on probation starting January fifth.

City Councilwoman Shelia Cockrel says the plea ends the case that started with the firing of officers Gary Brown and Harold Nelthrope for suspicious reasons.

“But we still really don’t have the answer to why Mr. Kilpatrick and Ms. Beatty were so intent on getting Deputy Chief Brown out and getting people in the Executive Protection Unit out of office… and I suspect that truth will eventually be out.”

Cockrel says there are still additional questions looming about the previous administration.

“This mess is far from over in terms of the large question of corruption in city government.”

Cockrel says a federal investigation continues into a multi-million dollar deal involving a sludge hauler. The investigation is not only looking at former Mayor Kilpatrick but his family and members of Detroit city government… including the city council.
