The Mayor of Detroit says auto help starts at home.
Mayor Kenneth Cockrel says the collapse of any of the Detroit Three automakers would be devastating not only to the state but the nation. As the heads of the automakers speak in Washington, Cockrel says he’s calling mayors in other cities and asking them to lobby Congress for the bridge loans in the industry is seeking. Cockrel says area residents should do like-wise.
“By calling their friends and relatives that may live in other parts of the country. And say look Cousin Bob or Aunt Jan I need you to call your congressperson… I need you to call your senator and tell them to do the right thing on the auto industry issue.”
Cockrel says the issue is bigger than a Detroit or Michigan one since 10% of all jobs in the US are connected to the auto industry. The three domestic automakers are seeking $34 billion in loans in order to stay afloat.
