Cockrel Picks Fromer U.S. Attorney as Deputy Mayor
Sep 17, 2008
Metro Desk

Detroit’s incoming interim Mayor is welcoming the first member of his cabinet.

City Council President Ken Cockrel, Junior says when he is sworn into office as Mayor on Friday his Deputy Mayor, Saul Green, will also take the oath of office.

“He is a noted attorney. He is known throughout the entire country, and probably internationally, for the work that he has done. He is also a former US Attorney. And he is somebody who has a strong sense of ethics, takes important stands and who fights for what he believes in.”

Green says there is only a small window of time available to get the city moving again following the fall of Kwame Kilpatrick.

“There’s much to accomplish in a short period of time. We will need the cooperation of employees, citizens and the business community. There’s neither the time nor interest in “business as usual” as we move forward.”

Green says he’ll focus on improving the Detroit Police Department. This follows some Federal oversight of the department due to mistreatment of suspects in its custody.

Green says he’ll also work on improving the transparency of City of Detroit’s legal department. This follows complaints from city council members that the law department hid secret settlement information related to Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and the whistleblowers’ lawsuit.

Green is an attorney with over 35 years of experience and is former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan.
