City Council Wants Incinerator Closed
Jun 30, 2009
Metro Desk

The Detroit City Council wants the incinerator to stop burning trash.

The Council voted six-two to press for a court injunction against the operation of the incinerator after its contract expires on July first.

City Councilwoman JoAnn Watson authored the resolution against the Greater Detroit Resource Recovery Authority.

“At what cost is early preventable death related to asthma? At what cost is a 21st century city acting like it’s still in the 19th century… burning refuse instead of earning money from the same trash?”

Watson and other council members would like Detroit to go to landfilling and recycling as a better way to handle waste.

An outside attorney will be hired to handle the injunction effort.
